At Appsafe we have had endless requests from parents looking to filter YouTube videos, unfortunately Appsafe cannot filter within YouTube, but all is not lost.

YouTube has a built-in content filter that is more than adequate and should help block most of the inappropriate content on YouTube.

YouTube states “If you are under 13 years of age, then please do not use the Service”, this means that they are filtering with 13 to 17-year-olds in mind and as a result some material may still be inappropriate for your child.

The first step is to log into YouTube with your Gmail account or setup a shared family account. logging into YouTube lets you monitor what they are watching as well as any shared information they may send. In addition, having a family account will get you past the minimum age requirement and set common rules for your family.

Create a new Gmail account by going to Gmail.com, click Create an account, and fill out the form.

Then you can set up your YouTube channel, a shared family calendar, and a shared inbox for family emails. Any videos viewed on the account will show up in the History button on the left.

Activating restricted mode within the YouTube App:

Open the YouTube App and login with your shared account details, under your profile click on setting and toggle restricted mode “on”.

Activating Restricted mode within a browser:

Navigate to youtube.com and login using your account details, once logged in scroll all the way down to the bottom of the home page and turn to “On”.
